A mother’s chore is never-ending and one major task besides providing food is that of washing. We were a large family and my mom was always busy preparing us for life. Since we were so many, we each had a chore to helped in the house hold. It helped us to be responsible and prepared us as we confronted life’s challenges. See how A Guide Teaching kids to do Laundry helped our family be responsible and ready for challenges.
One of the task she asked us to help with most was the laundry. The basket was always full and if we did not help the clothing would pile up and made the place untidy. She had a guide to help us become responsible. She would make it fun to do and kept us out of mischief. It really was encouraging as she would make our favorite food which was our reward. I mean, please, a way to her children’s stomach was through her delicious food.
It is awesome that my mom taught us at different age certain things. It make life interesting and then you either look forward to something you like or do not enjoy and can’t wait for the coming year to growing up.
There were couple of us at that age and we use to help each other by learning the days of the week. We had days that we were in charge of making sure the clothes basket are is cleaned and encouraged others to drop the clothing in the basket and checked each other who does not.
The toddlers wanted to do something so we would ask him or her to pick up what fell on the ground and helped us to keep the place tidy. In reality, we played the game of who got to the waste basket with the pampers or the cloth diaper to the laundry basket. Oh, we all knew the difference and how to help with the environment.
Mom was always singing and we followed cue as well. There always seemed to be party in our home with a choir singing along. When we were kids we all sing the same songs so that was lots of fun and she kept us going. You see that kept us entertain for a long time. It made our world go round.
Ages 4 – 8 years old
These years we were taught to sort out the pairs of socks and the under wear for boys and girls. Oh, this was sometimes fun as we would sometimes hid the sock we knew someone was looking for to pair them up. Oh, sometimes it was not happy but the music made a world of a difference as mom knew when there was a need to change the pace in songs. It is amazing how mothers knows when to do things. We had to put them away in their correct place. You see, there is the act of no child left behind well, we had no sock left behind. Very funny!!
Time has change and I have my little ones helped in different ways such as
- Without being asked to bring laundry baskets downstairs on wash days.
- Before each wash to clean out the lint trap in the drawer and replace it.
- Take clothes out of the washer and put into the dryer.
- Always fold and put away their own clothes by themselves.
- Clean and organize dresser drawers as needed.
Ages 8 -10
Here is when patience is practice and we needed a smooth talker but mom did this successfully as we enjoyed going to the park and eating ice-cream on certain day of the month oh yeah, not every weekends. But you know, we have so many lovely countless memories. Here are my simple and easy chores:
- Add appropriate amount of laundry detergent (liquid or powder) washer based on the amount of clothing and colors we will wash.
- Learn to set the washer and dryer to wash and heat settings and turn on based on clothing and colors.
- Add dryer sheets (or dryer balls) as needed.
- Before each wash, separate lights and dark clothing appropriately.
I remember a this age we wanted to be outside with the friends but until we had finished our chores. We had a choice of staying indoors or completing our task then ask- decisions. I would sometimes be asked if the task can be completed after? What do you think? Would your boss pay you before you work? Great idea!
- Do their own laundry completely.
- Learn how to pre-treat common stains which is very important. I keep learning as a mom, :)!
- Iron clothes on cheaper clothing first, we try (without burning themselves, the house, or their clothes) as needed. (Supervision required)
As teens, we knew to do pretty much most everything since we are from a large family. You were motivated and wanted to be grown up and be with the others. Today, teens are motivated as they are thinking of going off to College. This is the time to prepare them for independence. Sooner or later, they’ll be looking to find an industrial laundry service to assist them in getting their work-wear professionally cleaned. This will eventually save them a lot of time in the long run. But for now, it is important for teens to understand the basics, which can help them out later on in life. It is not an easy time but they will be happy for the time of preparation. They will appreciate the time you dedicated when they are away.
- Suggestions as where to take dry clean only items.
- A day out to the laundromat.
- Being prepared: how to pre-treat and remove tough stains..
- Folding personal items appropriately: fitted sheets, towels, comforter.
- Suggestions of how often towels, sheets, and comforter needs to be washed.
- Washing their personal items (towels, sheets, comforter.)
Our nearest laundromat is amazing. They have so many machines and you can even pay for their services using the Shinepay App. There are Apps for just about everything these days and your teenager will love getting to use an App at the laundromat. Technology really does make everything easier!
Not only do these washers have mega capacity to tackle any size load, they are energy efficient while giving you the best cleaning performance. No wonder more households have chosen LG laundry over any other brand. My perfect solution! And if you were interested in staying money efficient with your washer it might be a good idea to teach the kids about finding the right energy quote as well, teaching them the art of energy comparison will save them so much money throughout their lives.
