Chicas Poderosas FIU -Day 1
The effects of our actions is similar with our education. If we plant the right seeds, we reap flavorful crop and provide good benefits for our children’s future. At times, life passes us some extra manure for our crops and using it right, we receive more benefits. This pass week, I was invited to an awesome conference on behalf of the Chicas Poderosas. I will enlightened you about this fabulous group in another post, ok? But let me show you some of the awesome experience of planting that seed to create a brilliant future. The first day there were talks that featured salary negotiation, work/life balance, covering minorities, virtual reality as well as photography and videos.
Really, I saw FIU on the flyer and that caught my attention which made me read more about this event. Chicas Poderosas FIU event came about as a challenge that was issued by one of the founder of Chicas Poderosas and of course it was taken up by the students and that is how this event came about. Some natural leaders took it upon themselves and challenged others to make this successful event possible.
The schedule was quite interesting as it had many interesting guest speaker from various media. It sure was quite different from other events but the professional media speakers excitement at their success was quite contagious. Before I continue any further, most of the participants for this event were upcoming journalist. These journalist were of three major sectors: TV, newspaper or radio.
On the first day, there were some very interesting topics:
- Being a Girl Boss
- There were 4 amazing women who gave their experience, tips and ideas on how the upcoming journalist can attain more in the “men’s world.” It is amazing that a female still has to work 3x as much as a male and still gets lesser wages. It is without saying that without a female version, the world would not be as colorful or interesting hence the name ChicasPoderosas.
- Covering Minorities
- This was a very interesting topic where 4 wonderful ladies gave their opinions and experience in their world with coworkers and clients.
- Visual StoryTelling
- This was a very colorful and beautiful world as these intelligent women share tips and ideas of eye-catching moments. They showed their version of how to bring the story across with just one picture that showed intense emotion that cause joy or sadness at a glance.
- Virtual Reality Workshop
- This portion was spectacular as we were transported into virtual reality and saw what it is like behind the scene.
It was quite inspiring listening to these awesome women and learning from their experience as they offer motivating tips of working in a male-dominated business. It is still a glass ceiling environment where men are paid more than a woman doing the same type of work. It is awesome though that with a women on the scene it changes and become more touching and you can feel that environmental impact of the circumstance.
There were also a time for fun in a galaxy far away in #Mamicityjedi, it was a colorful and workout that felt like we were in another world. It sure was exciting as learned all the steps and right touch. Work hard, play hard, kept the brain in sync. lol! Here we enjoyed “Star Wars” in preparation of protecting oneself with lightsabers .
It gives me great joy to see how prepared and exposed these upcoming journalist are as they begin their career. I am sure everyone has a different perspective on how they see the world and the news. We all perceive the news differently in the newspaper, TV or on the radio. Your thoughts on this topic would be encouraged and will be enjoyed. Looking forward to hearing from you soon?
